And after a while, you need to renew it. If you don&#8217;t have a digital certificate yet, you can ask a gestoria or legal service for administrative support.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As already mentioned, the NIE must be renewed from time to time (and the length of this time depends on your situation), but <strong>the number never changes<\/strong>. Once the personal identification number is attributed to you, it always remains the same. To keep it valid, however, it <strong>must be renewed<\/strong> before it expires.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_109500\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-109500\" class=\"size-full wp-image-109500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/nie-documents.jpg\" alt=\"nie documents\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-109500\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Necessary NIE documents<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"NIE_renewal_requirements\"><\/span>NIE renewal requirements<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In order to renew your NIE you must <strong>comply with the following requirements<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>You are <strong>not a citizen of the European Union<\/strong>, Switzerland or the EEA.<\/li>\n<li>You must have a <strong>valid passport<\/strong>. If it has expired, you must renew it.<\/li>\n<li>You <strong>cannot have a criminal record in Spain<\/strong>. Any problems with the Spanish police or justice system, or any registered crimes will have to be resolved before you start the renewal process.<\/li>\n<li>You are the <strong>holder of the residency permit<\/strong> that needs to be renewed. You can renew it from 60 days before until 90 days after the expiration date.<\/li>\n<li>You must have <strong>health insurance in Spain<\/strong>. If you have a job, you have been provided with a social security number.<\/li>\n<li>You must <strong>pay applicable fees<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Necessary_documents_to_renew_your_NIE\"><\/span>Necessary documents to renew your NIE<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In order to &#8216;renew&#8217; your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barcelona.cat\/internationalwelcome\/es\/numero-de-identidad-de-extranjero-nie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>NIE in Barcelona<\/strong><\/a>, or in any other Spanish city, you will first need to collect every <strong>NIE related document<\/strong> indicated below:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>A completed <strong>EX15 form<\/strong>, which is the original application form. Don&#8217;t forget the address.<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>valid passport<\/strong> or other document that proves the applicant&#8217;s nationality. You need to have both the original and a copy. If it has expired, you need to submit both the original and the new ID (and have copies of both).<\/li>\n<li>A written statement with the <strong>reason for renewal<\/strong>, issued by someone with the necessary authority (for example: a notary, a new employer, an insurance agent, a bank manager).<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>passport-sized photograph<\/strong> with a white background.<\/li>\n<li>Your<strong> affiliation number or proof of registration with the Social Security<\/strong> (<em>la Seguridad Social<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proof of payment of the fee<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_can_I_renew_my_NIE\"><\/span>Where can I renew my NIE?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Physically\"><\/span>Physically<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The document is issued by the <strong>DGP<\/strong>, or <strong><em>Direcci\u00f3n General de la Polic\u00eda<\/em><\/strong>, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/administracion.gob.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><em><strong>Administraci\u00f3n General del Estado<\/strong><\/em><\/a> is responsible for granting the number.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It can be renewed in person at the Immigration Offices, <strong><em>Oficina de Extranjeros<\/em><\/strong>, or at the<strong><em> Sede de Extranjer\u00eda<\/em><\/strong>. In order to renew your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barcelona.cat\/internationalwelcome\/es\/numero-de-identidad-de-extranjero-nie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>NIE in Barcelona<\/strong><\/a>, you must visit the <strong>office closest to your current address<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"fasc-button fasc-size-large fasc-type-flat fasc-rounded-medium ico-fa fasc-ico-before fa-chevron-circle-right broken_link\" style=\"background-color: #850909; color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/long-term-rental\" rel=\"nofollow\">Search for a monthly rental in Barcelona<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are two offices in Barcelona to complete the procedure: <strong>EU citizens should visit the Rambla de Guip\u00fascoa office<\/strong>, and <strong>non-EU citizens need to go to the office at Passeig de Sant Joan<\/strong>. Before showing up there spontaneously, you must <a href=\"https:\/\/sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es\/pagina\/index\/directorio\/icpplus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>have an appointment<\/strong><\/a> (a <em><strong>cita previa<\/strong><\/em>) for the NIE. Follow these steps to arrange an appointment:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Check the available provinces and select <em>Barcelona<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Select <em>Certificados E.U.<\/em> with <em>Tr\u00e1mites disponibles para la provincia Seleccionada<\/em>. Then click on <em>Aceptar<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>You will then see a warning telling you <em>En la siguiente p\u00e1gina le mostraremos los documentos necesarios&nbsp;<\/em>(The next page will show required documents). Click on <em>Aceptar<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Select <em>Pasaporte<\/em> and enter your passport number. Then click on <em>Aceptar<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Click on <em>Solicitar cita<\/em> (request appointment). Then you will see the address you need to visit.<\/li>\n<li>If the date and time shown are not convenient, you can change those at this time.<\/li>\n<li>Confirm your appointment by checking the box that says: <em>Deseo correo electr\u00f3nico para recibir los datos de mi cita<\/em>. Then print your appointment and take the confirmation with you.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div id=\"attachment_109499\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-109499\" class=\"size-full wp-image-109499\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/appointment-for-nie.jpg\" alt=\"people waiting in line for appointment for NIE\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-109499\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo via Unsplash<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the day of the appointment you take <strong>all the required documentation<\/strong> with you. Then you <strong>wait for the administrative agent to review those documents<\/strong>. If your application is approved, they will tell you how long it will take to receive it in your physical or digital mailbox.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There is a waiting list for a <em>cita previa<\/em>, and it may take several months before you get an appointment. You can visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/ajuntament.barcelona.cat\/es\/canales-de-comunicacion-ciudadana\/presenciales\/puntos-de-registro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong><em>Registro P\u00fablico Oficial<\/em><\/strong><\/a> with all the previously mentioned documents without having an appointment, if you can&#8217;t wait that long. The administrative agent will put a stamp on your application and send it to the<em> Immigration Office<\/em>. This shortens the waiting time and starts the procedure as well. You will receive your documents when everything is processed.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"By_mail\"><\/span>By mail<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Once you have prepared all the<strong> required documents<\/strong>, you can also ask for a renewal of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/nie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NIE<\/strong> <\/a>by sending it by mail (the <strong><em>Correos<\/em><\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The process is the same as with going to the <strong>Immigration Office<\/strong> or the <strong><em>Registro P\u00fablico Oficial<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/strong>Take all the documents you have collected and prepared, and take them with you (including two copies of the <strong>EX15 form<\/strong>) in an open envelope to the <strong>Correos office closest to you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They will provide your documents with a stamp, and you will keep a copy of the stamped application form. The Correos will then send your envelope directly to the <strong>NIE office<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you prefer sending your documents by mail, we advise you to use the option <strong><em>correo certificado con acuse de recibo<\/em><\/strong>. This is more effective and secure.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_109498\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-109498\" class=\"size-full wp-image-109498\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/online-nie.jpg\" alt=\"online nie renewal\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-109498\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Online NIE renewal<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Online\"><\/span>Online&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To formalize the <strong>NIE renewal procedure online<\/strong>, you must follow the steps below:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>You need a <strong>computer with access to the internet<\/strong>, and you need to be able to print your proof of the application.<\/li>\n<li>You need to be in the possession of a <strong>digital certificate<\/strong> that is recognized by any of the official certification entities, or you need an electronic ID card.<\/li>\n<li>Are you part of an administrative agency or law firm? Then, <strong>as long as you are registered with the corresponding council<\/strong>, you are able to use the agency&#8217;s access.<\/li>\n<li>Once you have chosen the desired option, you should <strong>fill in the form<\/strong> and attach required documentation.<\/li>\n<li>You will, in the end, be asked to <strong>sign a form and the documentation<\/strong> with the previously mentioned digital certificate. For this you need to have installed the AutoSignature software.<\/li>\n<li>Then you will receive <strong>an electronic document<\/strong> (PDF) that is proof of your procedure.<\/li>\n<li>To complete the procedure you must also <strong>attach proof of payment of the fee<\/strong>. You can pay by visiting the Ministerio de Hacienda y Administraciones P\u00fablicas, or by paying through your own bank. Then download proof of payment and add this to the procedure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With all the information above, you are now ready to complete the process of <strong>renewing your NIE in Barcelona<\/strong>.
