A beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/best-beaches-near-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">beach<\/a> town with some <strong>special characteristic<\/strong>s\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/L%27Estartit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">L\u2019Estartit<\/a> is a small town (not so small during the summer months) famous for its <strong>unique view<\/strong> and for the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medes_Islands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Illes Medes<\/a><\/em>, an archipelago composed of several uninhabited small islands. These islands are protected and are home to different species of flora and fauna. If you don\u2019t want to dive or swim, don\u2019t worry, the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/english.nautilus.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Nautilus<\/a> boat with windows in its lower part is the perfect way to do it. There are other companies offering different kinds of tours with <strong>different boats to the islands<\/strong>, which are only 1km off shore.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_bit_of_history\"><\/span><strong>A bit of history<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">L\u2019Estartit was basically a fishing village until the touristic boom of the 60\u2019s. As in many other towns in the Costa Brava area, lots of hotels, flats and apartments were built at that time. This is obvious in the nowadays physiognomy of the town, which still keeps part of its charm. Take <b>Santa Anna<\/b> street and you\u2019ll find local shops, touristic stands, cafes, bars\u2026 all for different tastes and kinds (from tacky <img class=\" size-medium wp-image-55149 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/estartit2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"estartit2\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/>souvenirs to nice presents, from cocktails and refreshing juices to ice cream and pinchos). I would suggest\u00a0to start in the peaceful and nice square with the church and walk towards the seafront. In numbers 24 and 26 in Santa Anna street you\u2019ll find the <b><i>Americanus<\/i><\/b><b> houses<\/b>, a couple of twin colonial style houses built at the end of the 19th century by Catalans that had been lucky in their journey to America and had returned to live the end of their lives in their hometowns. They were called the <i>Americanus<\/i>, and they typically built beautiful colonial style houses (reminiscent of the places where they had made their fortune, Cuba and other Spanish colonies) and planted palm trees in front of them. There are lots of examples around beach towns in Catalonia, but in the case of L\u2019Estartit they also built a clock tower, that is well conserved today and that stands next to the houses. Another historical peculiarity that you\u2019ll find in the town are <b><i>cadenys<\/i><\/b>, very narrow alleys among streets that served as run off channels for the rain water on its way to the sea, but also as a shortcut to walk around the town.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Places_nearby\"><\/span><strong>Places nearby<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Torroella de Montgri, and its nice castle on top of the hill, is just a few kilometres away. The best way to explore the area is renting a car, and visit beautiful towns like Pals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/getaway-near-barcelona-palamos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Palam\u00f3s<\/a> or Palafrugell.
