The city\u2019s beaches are a great way to spend a lunch break, picnic with friends or just read a book in the sun \u2013 but if you want something less crowded, more beautiful, more peaceful and generally more beach-like then it is worth exploring a little further, especially if you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/short-term-rentals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong>staying in Barcelona<\/strong><\/a> for more than a weekend.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The region has a wealth of beaches both north and south of the city of Barcelona that are much more conducive to relaxation and closer to nature. The beaches throughout the Maresme coast are generally broad and visually appealing and being 30 minutes from the city \u2013 but not yet <strong>Costa Brava<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 they are pleasingly quiet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The railway between the city of Barcelona and Matar\u00f3 was constructed in the mid 1800s and was Spain\u2019s first train line, a symbol of the fast industrialisation at the time. The railway\u2019s proximity to the coast makes it ideal for people getting away from the city for a day on the beach, although it tracks don&#8217;t add to the scenery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To get to Maresme, take the R1 from Placa Catalunya, Barcelona Sants, Arc De Triomf or Clot and get off at Maresme.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sant_Pol_de_Mar\"><\/span>Sant Pol de Mar<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beyond <strong>Maresme<\/strong> you will find<strong> Sant Pol de Mar<\/strong>, a charming little fishing town just an hour from Barcelona. Expect delightful white houses, fishing boats and winding roads.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A steep rocky outcrop provides shelter and makes the gently curving beach a more intimate option than the other beaches in this area. Not to mention, that due to its lovely clear water Sant Pol de Mar\u00a0is a perfect snorkeling spot!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To get to Sant Pol de Mar, take the R1 from Placa Catalunya, Barcelona Sants, Arc De Triomf or Clot and get off\u00a0at Sant Pol de Mar.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Caldes_dEstrac\"><\/span>Caldes d\u2019Estrac<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_83012\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83012\" class=\"wp-image-83012 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/sand-castle-796488_1280-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"sand sculptures on beach\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-83012\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo via Pixabay<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Caldes d\u2019Estrac<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 or <strong>Caldetes<\/strong>, as it\u2019s also known \u2013 has two long and broad beaches giving you enough space to shake your beach towel without covering the person sitting next to you in sand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One beach is lined with beautiful Modernista villas that were built in the early 1900s for Barcelona\u2019s middle-classes who would try to escape here from the summer heat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To get to Caldes d\u2019Estrac, take the R1 from Placa Catalunya, Barcelona Sants, Arc De Triomf or Clot and get off at Caldes d\u2019Estrac.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ocata\"><\/span>Ocata<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ocata<\/strong> has a wide and clean beach from which you can just about make out the outline of La Vela (The W Hotel) in Barcelona whilst you top up your tan, read your book or take pictures with your smartphone. (You know you will.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you are feeling more active, there is a narrow pathway that runs alongside the train track which is ideal for a stroll or a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/dog-beach-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">doggy<\/a> <\/strong>walk. You will generally find locals here and it\u2019s nudist friendly if you want to give your nether regions a nice tan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To get there, take the train to Viladecans from Barcelona and then take the VB-4 bus, which will drop you at the beginning of a dirt track from which it is a ten-minute stroll to the beach. Try to resist the temptation to unclothe before you get there. That won&#8217;t be easy though!<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Castelldefels\"><\/span>Castelldefels<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Castelldefels<\/strong> is just 25 minutes from Barcelona by train and then a five-minute walk\u00a0to get to the beach. The spacious beach is a popular destination for both windsurfing and kitesurfing, which gives it a lively the ambience. The sand on the beaches of Castelldefels is clean and there are chiringuitos alongside to grab a bite once you are done riding the waves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The town centre of Castelldefels isn\u2019t the most visually appealing in Spain, but there is a small area around the main plaza that is quite pleasant with plenty of cafes, bakeries and restaurants to choose from.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To get to Castelldefels, take a train from Estacio de Franca, Passeig de Gracia or Estacio Sants and take off\u00a0at Garraf train station.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gava_Mar\"><\/span>Gav\u00e0 Mar<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_99396\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99396\" class=\"wp-image-99396 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/ocean-931776_1920-300x236.jpg\" alt=\"girl on beach with sunset\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-99396\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo via Pixabay<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For a complete change of pace you can wander\u00a0a little farther along the coast to\u00a0<strong>Gav\u00e0 Mar,<\/strong> which is much more peaceful than its neighbouring towns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The beaches here are wide with undulating dunes and a wooded area with pathways make\u00a0Gav\u00e0 Mar\u00a0feel much more intimate and natural than the bustling Castelldefels and its multitude of kite surfers and Sitges with all its hot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/nude-beaches-in-barcelona\/\"><strong>naked<\/strong><\/a> men.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There isn\u2019t much here other than the beach, a couple of restaurants and a chiringuito. No wonder: its location makes Gav\u00e0 Mar\u00a0more difficult to get to than other places along the same stretch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, this also means that you are pretty much guaranteed a peaceful and uncrowded beach. So if you&#8217;re after more intimate surroundings and don&#8217;t mind hoofing it an extra ten minutes or so, get to Gav\u00e0.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To get there, take a train from Estaci\u00f3 de Fran\u00e7a, Passeig de Gracia or Estaci\u00f3 Sants and take off at Castelldefels Platja train station. From here walk along the coast southwards until you reach Gav\u00e0.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Garraf\"><\/span>Garraf<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Garraf is a lovely cove that nestles beneath the hills between Castelldefels and Sitges. This tiny and pretty beach is bordered by a row of privately owned huts. Once a working beach full of fisherman, it now functions solely as a destination for beach-lovers heading south from the city of Barcelona and yearning for peaceful surroundings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Expect a quiet and intimate beach, much more so than its neighbouring Castelldefels and Sitges. Between the sea and the mountains you will find olive groves and vineyards. It\u2019s difficult not to like Sitges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Apart from its popularity, which means that it can get very crowded during the summer, the beach is long and the town centre is exceptionally charming.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The waters are warm, and so are the waiters, and it is possible to walk south along the coast to find quieter beaches. There are lots of chiringuitos and great restaurants in the town itself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There is a nudist-friendly beach in Aiguadol\u00e7 which is a 15-25 minute walk northwards along the coast. Sitges was until recently known as the gay riviera, and is therefore a very gay-friendly resort.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many of the shops are aimed at gay men, but that\u2019s not to say that it isn\u2019t open to everybody. Expect nudity on the beaches very north and very south of the city.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To get to Sitges, take a train from Estacio de Franca, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/shops-passeig-de-gracia\/\">Passeig de Gracia<\/a><\/strong> or Estacio Sants and take off\u00a0at Sitges train station. The beach is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the station.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Torredembarra\"><\/span>Torredembarra<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Further South towards Tarragona, you will find <strong>Torredembarra<\/strong> &#8211; one of the few natural beaches left in Catalunya. With fine white sand and saltwater lagoons it\u2019s an ideal location for some gentle swimming, sunbathing or picnics. There are good restaurants and great places to explore in the neighbouring natural park.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To get to Torredembarra, take a train from Estacio de Fran\u00e7a, Passeig de Gracia or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/neighborhood-sants\/\"><strong>Estacio Sants<\/strong><\/a> towards Tarragona and take off\u00a0at Torredembarra train station.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Altafulla\"><\/span>Altafulla<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_99397\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99397\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-99397\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/32304116507_0b94eb1551_h-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"town of altafulla with sea\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-99397\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo by F\u00e8lix Gonz\u00e1lez via Visualhunt<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just before you get to Tarragona, and about an hour from Barcelona, you will find <strong>Altafulla<\/strong> \u2013 a long and beautiful beach that is considered the finest in the <strong>Costa Daurada<\/strong>. The town is attractive too with a lovely old centre and a tower on a cliff that is visible either side.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To get to Altafulla, take a train from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/a-little-history-the-estacion-de-francia\/\">Estaci\u00f3 de Fran\u00e7a<\/a><\/strong>, Passeig de Gracia or Estaci\u00f3 Sants and get off at Altafulla train station. The beach is a 10-15 minute walk from here.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t want to travel anymore after having arrived in Barcelona, you can always rent an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/barcelona-rent\/beach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong>apartment near the beach<\/strong><\/a>.
