Barcelona is renowned for its rich music scene<\/a>. It\u2019s therefore of little surprise that the city boasts a similarly diverse array of music startups. One of the most prominent of these is BMAT<\/strong> (Barcelona Music and Audio Technologies).<\/p>\n

\"download\"BMAT<\/strong> operates as a B2B (business-to-business) startup rather than a consumer-oriented music company, licensing their creations to\u00a0third-parties who incorporate the technology into their own products. BMAT<\/strong> audio technology is able\u00a0to monitor music all around the world and has been developed into a range of products that provide the means to analyze singing performance, recommend music and ensure the protection of performing rights.<\/p>\n

“Our aim is creating software that can interpret music just like a person can,” says CEO \u00c0lex Loscos.<\/p>\n

Founded in 2006, BMAT\u2019s<\/strong> roots lie in the Music Technology Group (MTG) at Barcelona\u2019s University Pompeu Fabra<\/a>, the world’s largest research lab in computer music science. Observing growing industry interest in the audio technologies created at the MTG lab, MTG alumni and BMAT\u2019s<\/strong> future founders saw the opportunity to commercialize some of the research taking place there. The university allowed them to form a separate company using MTG’s technology under an exclusive license and today maintains a 5% share in BMAT<\/strong> as well as receiving royalties from sales of BMAT<\/strong> products.<\/p>\n

In 2009, BMAT<\/strong> won the first edition of Hit Barcelona\u2019s Global Entrepreneurship Competition, and with it an award \u20ac50,000 and inclusion in the business development programs provided by Barcelona Activa and 22@Barcelona<\/a>. It received additional government support in soft loans and grants but is yet to receive any venture capital funding. Despite this, the company is already in profit, and today counts a wide-range of clients connected to the music industry.<\/p>\n

<\/a>These clients range from performing rights organisations, such as ASCAP the leading Performing Rights Organization in the U.S.A.; labels and publishers, including the world\u2019s largest music content company Universal Music Group; digital platforms and music services such as Red Karaoke; telecommunications and communications companies including Intel and Samsung; and entertainment & media groups including Spain\u2019s Kiss FM radio station.<\/p>\n

The technology BMAT<\/strong> provides to these clients is available in three distinct products. The first that was released by the company was the singing evaluation system SKORE. SKORE, BMAT<\/strong> claims, is the first software available that can objectively analyze and evaluate singing performances. SKORE can be used to compete with friends and improve singing skills and can be easily implemented into social networking, online gaming and karaoke<\/a> platforms. A second product is ELLA, an audio analysis, search and recommendation engine that can help media services to understand and personalize music.<\/p>\n

The third product, and now BMAT\u2019s<\/strong> most successful\u00a0is the airplay monitoring service VERICAST. VERICAST utilizes what is known as \u2018audio fingerprinting\u2019 to ensure the protection of performance rights and royalties for copyrighted material. Once a song is uploaded to BMAT,<\/strong> it automatically begins to detect the music globally, through radio, TV and online plays. In addition to the master recordings, any derivations of the song, such as cover versions, are also detected. As BMAT\u2019s Chief Techonology Officer Pedro Cano elaborates, \u201cOur technology does not look at a particular recording but at the inherent music. This allows collection agencies to track live performances, interpretations and covers on the Internet.\u201d<\/p>\n

The success of these products has led BMAT<\/strong> to focusing on their development rather than the creation of new products. With the protection of performance rights becoming an increasingly crucial issue for the music issue, BMAT<\/strong> can look forward to a prosperous future.<\/p>\n
