{"id":11057,"date":"2014-10-02T16:45:58","date_gmt":"2014-10-02T14:45:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/?p=11057"},"modified":"2017-05-26T10:43:22","modified_gmt":"2017-05-26T08:43:22","slug":"myth-legend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/myth-legend\/","title":{"rendered":"Myths and Legends about Barcelona"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img class=\"alignright wp-image-11060 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/8589130422587-barcelona-city-wallpaper-hd1-e1475499801301-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Panoramic view of Barcelona\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are several <strong>myths and legends<\/strong> about the architecture in <strong>Barcelona.<\/strong> \u00a0Also, about the city itself and how it got its name, <strong>Barcelona.<\/strong> \u00a0Many of the legends focus on the Gothic Quarters, which has\u00a0four Roman columns.\u00a0 Three were originally from the temple\u00a0 they house the headquarters of the Catalan Excursionist Centre (CEC) on Carrer Paradis.\u00a0 The columns are the remains of the ancient Temple of Augustus which are at the highest point of the city on Mont Taber.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11059\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11059\" class=\"wp-image-11059 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/columns-barca-300x121.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"121\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11059\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Four Roman columns<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In order to prevent <strong>Barcelona<\/strong> from having tainted origins several legends have been devised about the original history of <strong>Barcelona.<\/strong>\u00a0 It has been said to be the city of Greek origin and it was founded by Hercules.\u00a0 Hercules was on a journey when nine ships were separated and eight managed to regroup.\u00a0 When they set off to find the ninth ship, they found it moored at the bottom of the hill of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/barcelonas-natural-highs\/\" target=\"_blank\">Montjuic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Related article: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/barcelonas-most-beautiful-churches\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barcelona&#8217;s most beautiful churches<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11058\" style=\"width: 206px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11058\" class=\"wp-image-11058 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Gothic-Quarter-Barcelona-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"Barcelona Top Myths and Legends\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11058\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gothic Quarters<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The crew members fell in love with the area and decided to name it Barca (boat) an Nona (ninth), Barcanona.\u00a0 Apparently, Hercules met a girl in the city and fell in love with her, her name was Pyrene.\u00a0 They couldn\u2019t spend more than two months together, because their journeys stopped them from staying longer together.\u00a0 This is where the name \u2018Pyrenees\u2019 comes from.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another legend is the city\u2019s origins are attributed to the Carthaginians, to Hannibal Barca, Hannibal\u2019s father.\u00a0 When Hannibal arrived in the city, he fell in love with it and gave it, his surname Barca.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These stories remain legends\u00a0because they lack foundation. There are no archaeological grounds or historical evidence to back them up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The quiet street of Carrer Hercules runs along Placa Sant Just, which has a wealth of history.\u00a0 A Gothic water fountain which dates back to the fourteenth century can be found on this square.\u00a0 The legend says that it was created by Joan Fiveller when he was hunting in the forests of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/the-natural-side-of-barcelona-collserola-mountains\/\" target=\"_blank\">Collserola<\/a> when he came across a spring.\u00a0 The fountain was built on where the sprint was at the time and it still resides to date.\u00a0 It is near the palace and it is fully functional.\u00a0 It is the oldest fountain in <strong>Barcelona<\/strong> and the most important public fountain in the city.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Looking for an apartment in the city?
