The festival is well-known in entire Spain, because of its parades and the tons of candy that will be thrown into the public.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The celebrations begin with a pilgrimage to the chapel of Sant Medir in Collserola, where a tribute to the saint will be held. Upon return, the <em>colles<\/em> or groups will form a huge parade and pass through the neighbourhood\u2019s most characteristic streets. The festival takes place in the district of <strong>Gr\u00e0cia<\/strong>, <strong>La Bordeta<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/barcelona-rent\/sarria-sant-gervasi\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Sant Gervasi<\/strong><\/a>, and each place has its own <em>colles<\/em> or groups.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_102007\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-102007\" class=\"size-full wp-image-102007\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Photo-by-caohhhh-via-Pixabay.jpg\" alt=\"colourful lanterns in the street\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-102007\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo by caohhhh via Pixabay<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They all organize a parade and make the characteristic journey to the chapel. Once they have arrived at the chapel, there will be a mass, followed by commemorations. This will be in the form of ribbons that will be placed on each <em>colla\u2019s<\/em> flag.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s important to note that the Sant Medir festival takes place every March 3, both in <strong>Gr\u00e0cia<\/strong> and in <strong>Sant Gervasi<\/strong>.\u00a0If March 3 is on a Sunday, the festival will be moved to the next day, but in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/barcelona-rent\/sants-montjuic\/bordeta\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>La Bordeta<\/strong><\/a> the parade is always on the Sunday after the festival.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The festival originates from the district of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/barcelona-rent\/gracia\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Gr\u00e0cia<\/strong><\/a>. They say that in 1828 a baker, named Josep Vidal i Gran\u00e9s, made a promise in his prayers that if he was cured of an infection, he would visit the chapel of Sant Medir every year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And when all was said and done, each and every year more people joined him. Later on, however, the beans were replaced by candy, hence the name <em>&#8220;Dulce Fiesta&#8221;<\/em> (sweet festival).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As already mentioned, the departure of the <em>colles<\/em> starts in the district of Gr\u00e0cia on the morning of March 3. Before the pilgrimage to the chapel, <strong>the parade passes through some of the most popular streets of the district<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Once the religious part of the event at the chapel is over, which is around eight o&#8217;clock in the evening, the <em>colles<\/em> return in a <strong>very busy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/three-kings-parade-2020\/\">parade<\/a><\/strong>, inviting both young and old to collect all the candy they possible can.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Practically the same happens in <strong>Sant Gervasi<\/strong>. The <em>colles<\/em> go through neighbourhood streets in the morning, and then they go on a pilgrimage to the chapel of Sant Medir de Sant Cugat. On their way back, the great parade consists of <strong>floats<\/strong>, <strong>horses<\/strong> and, again, <strong>lots of candy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A similar course of events takes place in <strong>La Bordeta<\/strong>, except for the parade which happens the following Sunday. The parade in question is joined by the <strong>music band<\/strong> of the Guardia Urbana, and the location is the parish of Sant Medir.
