Schedule<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Fat Thursday<\/strong> (or <em>Dijous Gras<\/em>) marks the start of all carnival celebrations. This day is filled with traditions, and one of them is, of course, the tradition of good food. In Barcelona they specifically eat: <em><b>butifarra de huevo <\/b><\/em>(sausage),<b><em> tortilla<\/em> <\/b>(potatodish) and <em><b>coca de chicharrones<\/b><\/em> (also called <i>Coca de llardons<\/i> in Catalan &#8211; a thicker bread with baked bacon strips).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is very common for schools and among friends to organise a meal together or have snacks. And after this, they go to the centre of Barcelona to see a show in the afternoon.<\/p>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"su-box su-box-style-soft\" style=\"border-color: #498c50; border-radius: 10px; text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"su-box-title\" style=\"background-color: #7cbf83; color: #0c0b0b; border-top-left-radius: 8px; border-top-right-radius: 8px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>Programme Carnival Barcelona 2022<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-box-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"border-bottom-left-radius: 8px; border-bottom-right-radius: 8px; text-align: justify;\">Click <a href=\"https:\/\/media-edg.barcelona.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/11132038\/PROGRAMA-CARNAVAL-BCN-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">here<\/a> for the full programme with activities and the schedule for the parades<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the most typical activities during the week is <em><strong>La Taronjada<\/strong><\/em>, a happening that is almost a thousand years old, which was banned in 1333, because the main objective of this event was throwing (heavy) oranges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nowadays, however, te event is more peaceful as oranges have been replaced with orange balloons filled with confetti to represent the previous battle that took place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the <strong>carnival weekend<\/strong> (Friday 25, Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 February) the city will be filled with a vibrant atmosphere, people will be in costume and there will be lots of fun and laughter. They will decorate their interior to meet the joyful atmosphere. After all, carnival is for everyone!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the days of carnival, the old quarter of Barcelona is the scene of many of the <strong><em>r\u00faas<\/em><\/strong>, including the arrival of the <strong>King of Carnestoltes<\/strong> and the children&#8217;s parades which are organised by schools. The people in these parades are all dressed up in costumes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Out of all of these parades, one of the most outstanding is the one held in the neighbourhood of <strong>Barceloneta<\/strong>, but unfortunately it was decided to postpone the <em>Carnavalada<\/em> until March this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After an intense and festive carnival weekend comes <strong>Wednesday 2 March<\/strong>, also known as Ash Wednesday, when carnival comes to an end with the <strong>burial of the sardine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This day symbolises the death of the <strong>King and Queen of Carnestoltes<\/strong>, so the parade through the streets will maybe surprise you with its &#8220;mourning&#8221; atmosphere, where goodbye is being said to the main characters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And last but not least, and if you happen to like sardines, you can&#8217;t miss this last event: the popular <em>sardinadas<\/em> that are being organised in many of the city&#8217;s neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Carnival_in_Barcelona_-_its_origin\"><\/span>Carnival in Barcelona &#8211; its origin<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first documentation we find of <strong>carnival in Barcelona<\/strong> is from the <em>Concilio de Ciento<\/em> in 1333, in which the throwing of oranges is being prohibited and the use of masks is being regularised.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_72135\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.nl\/blog\/nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/16526358506_22d231680a_z.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72135\" class=\"size-full wp-image-72135\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.nl\/blog\/nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/16526358506_22d231680a_z.jpg\" alt=\"carnaval in de straten van barcelona\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-72135\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo via Visualhunt<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This means that carnival in Barcelona has been celebrated for <strong>centuries and centuries<\/strong>, but in the 16th century public authorities took control of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/holi-festival-2020\/\"><strong>festival<\/strong><\/a> and they created the events as we know them today: Fat Thursday, Carnival Friday and Ash Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The introduction of costumes, however, came much later than you might expect, because this started happening in the 19th century and it was due to the success of satirical novels that costumes became part of the tradition. To comlete this part on the history of carnival, we must also address the fact that during Franco&#8217;s dictatorship not a single Carnival was celebrated in our city.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Carnival_in_Sitges_-_one_of_the_most_popular_in_Catalonia\"><\/span>Carnival in Sitges &#8211; one of the most popular in Catalonia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Only 35 minutes from Barcelona you will find one of the most spectacular carnival celebrations in Catalonia, the <strong>Sitges Carnival<\/strong>. This coastal town is located in the<strong> Garraf region<\/strong>, and it is one of the most significant locations for the gay community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the week of carnival, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/sitges\/\"><strong>Sitges<\/strong><\/a> usually welcomes around 300,000 people, which means the population nearly tenfolds.
