Sant Mart\u00ed consists of ten neighbourhoods, and it is actually one of the largest districts in the Catalan capital. What are now the <strong>neighbourhoods of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/barcelona-rent\/sant-marti\/poblenou\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Poblenou<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/barcelona-rent\/sant-marti\/besos\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Bes\u00f2s<\/strong><\/a> used to be marshes, swamps and lagoons belonging to the Bes\u00f2s river delta.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Little by little the coastlines were added to the neighbourhoods, and this has led to Sant Mart\u00ed being what it is today, one of the <strong>largest neighbourhoods in Barcelona<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Romans, who first inhabited the land, called the farmland near their settlements <em>ager provincialis<\/em>, and this land was meant for providing the city with food.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_100198\" style=\"width: 212px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100198\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-100198\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/torre-agbar-4495258_640-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"torre gloriers barcelona\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-100198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo via Pixabay<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The construction of a Romanesque chapel, dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, resulted in the current name of the district, <span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.shbarcelona.com\/barcelona-rent\/sant-marti\/sant-marti\"><strong>Sant Mart\u00ed de Proven\u00e7als<\/strong><\/span>. They also marked a <em>sagrera<\/em> (holy and safe grounds) around the area, built some farmhouses and then a small town started to develop. For centuries this was the centre of Sant Mart\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With 221,029 inhabitants (2005), Sant Mart\u00ed is the second most populated district in the city of Barcelona, it is fourth in area surface (10.8 km\u00b2), the second largest urban area and sixth in population density (20,466 inhabitants\/km\u00b2).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The land is flat and flows <strong>towards Barcelona&#8217;s coastline<\/strong>.
