The best independent cinema in American Film Fest

Tomorrow February the 19th begins the second edition of Movistar Americana Film Fest, a festival that, after the success of the first edition, brings back the best independent films from North America. To all those thirsty film fans that love good quality films that don’t reach commercial cinemas, and for those who couldn’t attend to festivals like Sundance or South By Southwest, we say: calm down and buy your Americana tickets! A perfect cinematographic plan for the weekend (until 22nd this month) and comes highly recommended by ShBarcelona.

Sections of Festival

All screenings in the official section of the festival (Americana TOPS and American NEXT) will take place in Cinemes Girona (Girona Street 175). If you are a member of this cinema club you can buy your ticket at 4 euros, but you’ll pay the affordable rate of 5 euros if you are not a member. You can also buy 5 tickets at 20 euros. Choose carefully the movies you want to watch to avoid pay a lot of money… A part of the official section you can also see a selection of North alternative American highlighted films (Americana BACK section) in the Film Archive of Catalonia every Thursday until February the 24th. The opening of the festival will be tomorrow at 8.30pm in Girona Cinemes with the film “Before I Disappear” (by Shawn Christensen, winner of an Oscar for best short film) and the short film “Today’s the Day”, closing up with the screening of the movie “Selma“. This film is nominated for an Oscar and narrates the struggle of Martin Luther King for the rights of black citizens. The kids will have the opportunity to learn how to make stop-motion in the workshops of the Americana KIDS section.

We recommend taking a look at the programming in the festival website, but there are several prominent projections that you should consider. Among them is “Night Moves” by Kelly Reichardt with Jesse Eisenberg and Dakota Fanning as the main characters, “Cheatin” by the animator Bill Plympton,”Little Feet” by Alexandre Rockwell (he managed to beat Tarantino at Sundance Festival),”Kumiko“a “metafilm” about Fargo, “Dear White People” -special jury award at Sundance-, “Listen Up Philip” with Jason Schwartzman,”Rich Hill”, winner for best feature film at Sundance, or “Life itself”, about the last years of the film critic Roger Ebert’s life.
