Having fallen out of fashion for many years, the neighbourhood of Poble Sec is currently experiencing a resurgence in interest from both locals and tourists alike.  It is not hard to understand the attraction: a relaxed small-town atmosphere, quirky Modernist buildings, pretty terraces and a great variety of quality restaurants just a stone’s throw away from the parks of Montjuïc.

If you’re looking for a place to relax with a glass of wine, or enjoy a coffee on your return from a visit to the Fundació Joan Miró or the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) then Poble Sec has a great selection of bars and cafés with terraces where you can watch the world go by. Let ShBarcelona take you on a tour of the highlights…

Carrer de Blai

This is the main pedestrian thoroughfare of Poble Sec, running southeast from the Avinguda Paral·lel to the foot of Montjuïc. How best to chose between the many bars and cafés lining the street? Here are our recommendations:

Tiel·la Llibertat: This café-bar run by Italians serves up excellent coffees in a relaxed setting inspired by the paintings of Van Gogh. The bar is well-stocked and they have a good selection of tapas too. A great place to visit from around 6pm, when the locals flock here to unwind after work.

Koska Taverna: this Basque tavern is Carrer de Blai’s gourmet café. It’s a little more expensive than most, but most definitely worth it. They have an extensive wine list and their tapas are rather special: Fois gras toasts, caremelised apples, stuffed octopus, or a selection of Spanish cheeses: a menu guaranteed to please the most discerning diner!

This pleasant shaded spot is tucked away in the centre of Poble Sec’s narrow streets and alleyways. Of the many bars looking out onto the square, El Carro Gros is our favourite. Through the week, you can enjoy a menu here for €10. The bravas are among the best in town! El Sortidor restaurant in the same square is another great place to eat, with its Art Nouveau interior and its attractive terrace.

A little distance from Carrer de Blai you will find a sunny terrace on the corner of the Passeig de Montjuïc. Bar Seco is open at the weekend for brunch and offers delicious toasts and tortillas. Here you will also find a large selection of craft beers from Spain and Belgium. The terrace is large and peaceful, nestled at the foot of Montjuïc, which makes for an ideal place to stroll after enjoying a lunch with friends.

If you are looking for a base from which to explore the Poble Sec area, ShBarcelona has many properties which are guaranteed to suit your needs. So don’t hesitate to come and visit these delightful terraces, havens of calm in the centre of Barcelona.
