Living in Barcelona you will find you are fortunate enough to have a variety of transportation options. You do not need a car to get around the city. You can walk, ride a bike, take the bus, ride the subway, or hail a cab.

Each form of transportation just as reliable as the next. Although, if you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to get somewhere quickly, such as the airport, a taxi would be your best bet.

This article by ShBarcelona tells you everything you need to know about taking a taxi in Barcelona.

Taking a taxi in Barcelona

How much is a taxi in Barcelona?

Taxi rates in Barcelona are reasonably priced. You are typically charged an initial fare fee of 2,10€ and then 1,03€ per mile. If you are going to the airport or cruise port they will charge you 4€ per suitcase.

Add 8-10% if you are taking a taxi on a holiday and take into consideration that tolls and surcharges may apply.  Though they may tack on a couple of fees, Taxi’s in Barcelona are still more affordable than the U.S.

After looking at this Taxi Fare Finder chart, which compares average taxi rates from various cities, I found that the medium Barcelona Taxi price is 16,23€. Compared to Miami, where I am from, it is $21.

Where can you find a taxi?

You can pick up a cab at a cab stop. You know it is a cab stop when there is a line of cabs on the side of a road.

You can find them in front of shopping malls, plaza’s, or restaurants. Walk up to the first taxi in line and they will give you a ride. You can also call one of the city’s 20 taxi radio dispatch centers.

What taxi apps in Spain can you use?

Barcelona also has a few taxi apps that will get you the best fares, routes, and communication.

MyTaxi

MyTaxi launched in 2009 in Germany. Today it collaborates with 35.000+ taxi drivers throughout various countries. You can use my taxi in 40 different cities in Spain, including Madrid and Barcelona.

This dynamic app allows you to reserve a taxi 4 days in advance. It counts down the arrival of the taxi. You can pay with a card or via PayPal. You can also write reviews about your drivers and save the ones who you befriend.

Pide Taxi

Pide Taxi is similar to MyTaxi but on a smaller scale. It is the official app for La Asociacion de Radio Taxis de Espana (The association of radio taxis in Spain).  Although it is a small company it offers many pick-up locations and does not require you to register to use the app.

Simply download the app and you can begin to use it. Another great feature is you can reserve a taxi beforehand.

Join Up Taxi

The Join Up app is similar to Uber. You can choose to pick up an individual taxi or share one with someoneEven though you cannot rate your driver, the app allows you to reserve a taxi 7 days in advance, and it accepts credit cards.

It is available in a couple cities in Spain including Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Palma, San Sebastian, Bilbao, and Vitoria y Sabadell.

Prices? Check Taxi Fare Finder

If you would simply like to check how much it will cost you to get to your destination, I would suggest using Taxi Fare FinderIt will not make you register for anything. They calculate estimated fares so they know the price of your ride before you hop in. It is not a taxi company.

  • I wasn’t aware of any taxi apps in Barcelona! I will definitely have to give one of them a try when I’m over there.

  • Good advice for hailing a cab in Barcelona. It can be scary trying to find transportation in a foreign country so these tips should be helpful.

  • Great Information!
Many people ask about the best transport from the airport and I always recommend them Taxi Services Barcelona. It is a comfortable, reliable and quick and if you don’t know where are you going or which public transport to use, this is the best way how to get to the city centre.
There is a taxi parking outside of the main Terminals 1 or 2. You just need to walk out of the airport terminal and choose the taxi for you.
Their Captains love their customers and are highly educated which deals and guide their customers very well.

  • Can you request the size of taxi for your needs with the app/s? In other words, if it is 5 passengers with luggage as an example.

    • Hello Rafael,
Most apps allow you to send a request or message. So whether you are with a specific number of people or you have a special type of luggage (surf board), they will take this into account.

  • We have a taxi company and found this article whilst researching the industry in other countries.

We found it to be very helpful and we were surprised by how many different taxi apps there are in Barcelona. We has visited ourselves but I’m sure we will in the future and this will be useful to know and use.

    Thank you for sharing

  • Hi there,
    Thanks for the information.
The Barcelona taxi world was turned upside-down last year because of all the protests against Uber, so I think there should be an update on this post. And I have heard that one of the new players is the “Free Now” company. Do you know if they operate here?
