El Xampanet

This wonderful tapas bar first opened in 1929 and is still run by the same family. El Xampanet is loved by locals and tourists alike which means that it is packed from when it opens until the shutters fall closed. But don’t let the crowds put you off! Squeeze yourself in, order a glass of their wonderful house cava from the bar and dig into their array of traditional but varied and innovative tapas. Personally, we love the tuna and leek – light and delicate, a perfect first dish.

Cal Pep

Another busy place, Cal Pep seems to seat locals in the back and make tourists queue for the bar. However, this is a blessing in disguise as there is no menu here, so you can use your time in the queue to check out the food going by. Once seated, an array of mouthwatering traditional tapas await. Tell the waiter what you’d like or alternatively, let him decide for you. The seafood here is pretty special, we loved the gambas a la plancha.

Bar del Pla

This place offers traditional tapas with a twist. You’ll find croquettes on the menu but here they are made with squid ink to produce a rich, unctuous twist on the ham and cheese classic. Similarly, you’ll find calçots in spring but at Bar del Pla, they are served tempura style. Asian flavors and styles of cooking play a big role here.

Bormuth

A modern, trendy eatery, Bormuth serves a delicious array of traditional tapas to enjoy with your vermut. Bag a stool by the open front to watch the world go by while you share some of their wonderful croquettes and the mixed cheese and ham plate. Great atmosphere, great food and reasonable prices, Bormuth is the perfect place to while away an afternoon.
