Study medicine in Barcelona

Universities in Barcelona have an excellent reputation for academic study, especially in medicine. Each year the city welcomes thousands of international and national students eager to continue their training. In this article, we give you a list of the top universities to study medicine in Barcelona.

The University of Barcelona first opened its doors in 1450, and it is not only one of Spain’s oldest universities but it is also one of the best-ranked universities in the world. The university’s campus is super central and especially beautiful to walk through even if you are not a student. The medical school is located pretty close to the main campus, in Hospital Clinic.

Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona

Despite being just under 50 years old, the UAB has become one of the 200 top universities in the world. They have a large number of international students, with a quarter of its master’s degrees being taught in English. The faculty of medicine itself offers classes in iconic modernist buildings such as the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, designed by Lluis Domènech i Muntaner.

Universitat Internacional de Catalunya

UIC Barcelona is the youngest of the universities having started in 1997. They put a great emphasis on practical experience in their medicine degrees with 60% of the courses being is made up of practical classes giving students hands-on experience. The course aims to bring students into contact with patients early on in order to better prepare them for the health system following university. The medicine campus is in Sant Cugat which is just outside of Barcelona but easy to get to by FGC, just over half an hour from Barcelona city center.

Universitat Pompeu Fabra

Named after Pompeu Fabra, who dedicated his life to the Catalan language, and was instrumental in standardizing the language, Pompeu Fabra University is one of the newest universities in Barcelona. After opening in 1990, it has quickly grown to become one of the best universities in Europe. Pompeu Fabra University prides itself on the university’s focus on research. The medicine faculty is located right next to the beach in the Mar campus, perfect if you want to take a quick revision break on the beach! The university also hosts an impressive library which provides the perfect environment to study in.
