Learn how to sew in Barcelona

Written by Christine

Sewing is a skill that most of us aren’t too familiar with these days, apart from being able to fix a small hole in clothing or perhaps reattach a missing button from a shirt. If you would like the explore the art of sewing and learn how to use a sewing machine to create your own clothing or household items, there are various classes for you to try in Barcelona to get you started. Within no time at all, you will be creating your own handmade projects!

A short walk away from the Arc de Triomf is Rosas Crafts, a workshop and store that sells craft supplies for hobbies like sewing, knitting and embroidery. Almost every day of the month different workshops take place focusing on specific skills or aspects of sewing that will help you learn the basics or take on more advanced projects. If you’ve never sewed before, don’t worry. There are classes designed for total beginners, in which you will learn how to use a sewing machine or how to complete your first patchwork by hand. The majority of the sewing classes cost €50 for the entire course and meet for 2 hours in the afternoons once a week for about 4 months. In addition to the basic classes like learning your way around a sewing machine and knitting, you can take specific courses to design your own hats, lingerie, swimsuits, and more. Not only is this a great new skill to learn, you will feel so proud of yourself when you’re showing off all of your handmade goodies!

L’Atelier del Raval

Nestled in the Raval neighborhood is L’Atelier del Raval, a sewing shop that first opened its doors in 2007. The shop itself technically closed in 2011, but the owner and teachers continue giving courses at various civic centers throughout the city and continue the same as before. The instructors offer classes and workshops to cover the basics of sewing and to spread the knowledge and fun of handicrafts and creating something yourself. Of the current courses that are currently underway, most meet for 2-hour sessions, either for 4 weeks or 8 weeks. You can learn how to embroider, monogram, and clothes hampers to brighten up things around the home or to create unique gifts for friends and family. For more information about courses and locations, check out their website for contact information.

Lantoki is a unique place to try out sewing in Barcelona. It is a workshop in which you can rent your own workspace, including equipment, to create your own projects and designs. You can take a basic sewing class to develop your skills or take a course that is specialized in creating a product, like tee shirts or skirts. At the end of the course, you will be able to make your own clothing and learn the skills involved, like measuring, creating a pattern, and the sewing techniques needed to make it. If you are a complete beginner you can take the introduction class that will teach you how to use a sewing machine or how to sew by hand and perform the basic stitches. Lantoki will help you develop your creative side and make something truly unique.
