This Spanish theater group Owas created in 1979 by Marcel·lí Antunez, Carlus Padrissa, Pere Tantinyà, Quico Palomar and Teresa Puig in the town of Moiá, and has managed to become an institution within the performing arts in our country and, especially in Catalonia and Barcelona. Their stagings are unlike anything you’ve seen, leave the known and traditional boundaries, mixing in their productions performance, with gigantic mechatronic facilities, morbidity, controversial topics and disobedience to the pre-established normatives. Sometimes political and social issues appear in an implication that goes beyond the obvious artistic intentions.
What started as a group of street and popular theater with a name alluding to ferrets that inhabit Moiá, has ended up being a great company of international success including a lot of actors, athletes, tightrope walkers, technicians, designers, managers, collaborators, etc. Still, the “fureros” define themselves as a “criminal organization within the current art scene.” In their shows everything is scenic space, including the space dedicated to the audiences, which is occupied by the artists or by the scenery made of scrap metal, objects and mechanisms that move organically and mechanical building huge bodies, wheels, ships or unimaginable special vehicles.
All this builds an own scenic language, easily recognizable, which has been imitated by other companies. In 1992 La Fura dels Baus participated in the opening of the Olympic Games in Barcelona with a macro musical show directed by Ryuichi Sakamoto, which the company unveiled the world with. All the productions of this company since then has spread to various disciplines such as Internet with “Work in progress 97”, or music, with album releases of their productions in audio media and advertising or promotional activities for brands like Pepsi or Mercedez Benz, and films like “Faust 5.0” directed by Isidro Ortiz.
Their career and their theatrical productions, events, plays, films, artistic proposals, etc., have made the Fura dels Baus becomes a Catalan and Spanish culture “flag” that receive attention from all over the world. From ShBarcelona we invite you to keep track of this company if you visit Barcelona.
