Every year, in mid-August and for a whole week, they celebrate the “fiesta mayor” of one of the most emblematic areas of Barcelona, a celebration that culminates, in an excellent way, the end of the August holidays for many native vacationers.
The fiestas de Gràcia fill with color, music, joy and people its streets in this expected (and planned) event by many people throughout the year. Today at 7pm Esteve Camps Sala, president of the Construction Board of Trustees of the Sagrada Familia, read the opening speech of the celebration from the balcony of the City Council of Gràcia, initiating all the events and activities from tomorrow, August the 15th.
One of the best known sides of the Fiestas de Gracia is the decoration of the streets, competing with each other to get the first prize, focusing their decorations and sculptures on a theme that changes each year.
The creativity and innovation of each committee improve every year, transporting the visitors to an imaginary world of fantasy, and making it very difficult for the judges of the competition. In the programming of the celebration you can also find activities for all ages: “correfocs” for children, outdoor cinema, evening concerts for youngsters, dances and cabarets with orchestras, exhibitions, sporting events, popular dinners on the street, etc.
Each year the neighborhood complains about noises and crowds from the “night-party” in the streets of Gràcia, so this year the holiday schedule has been reduced until 2am and until 3’30am on holidays, promoting events and daytime activities.
