Beneath the surface of Barcelona’s sunny weather, tasty food, and unique architecture is the ultimate reason why I love living in this city: its rich poetry community. There are lots of people in this city dedicated to the art of writing, with many lovely cultural centers to provide a setting for different events. However, the majority of the poetry and that I have attended have been predominantly in Spanish. As poetry is a very high form of language, it can be frustrating as someone still learning the language to try to not only understand all of the words but the deeper meaning beneath them. With this in mind, I decided to take matters into my own hands and create an English open mic night!
What to Expect
The event will be held within the charming, exposed-brick walls of The Collective, a cultural center in Raval. It will be an open mic, meaning that anyone is welcome to sign up to perform in English. While the backbone of the event is poetry, music is also encouraged. The performances can be of pre-written material or improvisational. As the host, I will also perform my poetry in between the acts, though not always, of a “spoken word” variety; inspired by hip hop music, a lot of my poems have rhythm and flow with lots of rhyming.
Enough about myself, though, as I ultimately want to provide a familiar, artsy, and welcoming space for anglophones to perform in their native tongue as well as for anglophiles to experience a language that they want to practice. My vision is also to create a gathering point for artists to meet one another, interact, and even collaborate on future projects.
We hosted an event about one month ago as a tester, but from here on out the English Open Mic will be held twice a month on Thursdays. The launch will thus be on 16 June at 8:30 P.M. The Collective is located in Raval at Carrer d’en Roig 11, near Liceu metro (green line).
