One of the things that any new visitor to Barcelona comments on is how very proud the locals are to be Catalan. A lot of the signs around the city are in Catalan, there are flags of Catalonia hanging off balconies around every corner and the primary spoken language in the city is Catalan rather than Spanish. Bar Celta Pulperia is one of the most popular restaurants for Catalan tapas. Located right in the heart of the city, in the lower part of Barri Gotic, this bar is very proud of its house specialty: octopus, which is done in a variety of different ways. There are all different types of meats, fish and vegetables to choose from, making this one of the best places to go for a traditional dinner in the city.

Cerveseria Catalana is located next to Rambla de Catalunya. This larger, more open plan restaurant matches its modern and contemporary location, without losing any of its traditional Catalan charm. Most of their dishes come in a traditional Catalan style and the food is remarkably cheap for both its quality and the location of the restaurant.

Can Lluis, over in El Raval, offers both tapas and an a la carte dinner, both of which are traditionally Catalan. It is one of the best places in the city for a slightly more upmarket, Catalan dinner. Can Lluis specializes in seafood due to Barcelona’s proximity to the sea but the meat dishes that they serve are also fantastic!

Also in El Raval, this slightly more unknown restaurant is a real hidden gem for a lovely Catalan dinner. L’Antic Magatzem‘s dishes are more delicate and definitely focus more on taste rather than size. This is a small restaurant that prides itself in being Catalan and is definitely a great place for a special treat or a meal to end a lovely holiday in Barcelona.
