Barcelona Design Week Invades The City

Barcelona is easily one of the most internationally-renowned cities when it comes to design. It offers a variety of architectural sights for visitors and some of Europe’s top design programs and universities, and is a frequent destination for conferences and events featuring some of the world’s top designers. One event in particular, which self-describes as¨invading the city¨, definitely will not disappoint.

Barcelona Design Week is the crème de la crème of the city’s design force, regarded as one of the best design events of the year for its presentation of technological and architectural innovation. It started in 2006 and since then has been recognized by the World Design Weeks network and recognized by architecture and design magazine Dezeen as one of the best architecture, design and technology events for 2018. Organized collaboratively for the first time this year by the Barcelona Design Centre and Fostering Arts and Design (FAD), this event addresses various issues and topics in society through local design, each year through the lens of a different theme.

Tomorrow kicks off the 13th edition of Barcelona Design Week, lasting from 5-14 June. This year’s theme is Revalue, focused on reassessing and reflecting on existing elements of design and sustainability in society and how they transform. The event begins with an opening conference at the Disseny Hub Barcelona at 6:30 p.m., led by Brazilian industrial designer Umberto Campana, co-founder of Estudio Campana with his brother, Fernando Campano. Stick around afterwards for an opening party with music, food and installations starting at 7:30 p.m.

The event is an attraction for all lovers of design and architecture, from seasoned professional designers to students to interested community members. Throughout the week, there are a variety of activities all over the city where attendees can get involved, create, view exhibitions and attend lectures for free. Activities are categorized by Awards, Conferences + Round tables, Exhibitions + Installations, Films, Market, Open doors, Opening Parties, Presentations, Workshops. 

Here are just a few of the 100+ activities that will be ¨invading the city¨ between June 5-14: the Tastadisseny Gastronomy and Design festival on June 10, a lego creation workshop on June 6 and a typography workshop on June 12, a Terrace Market with products designed by students of LCI Barcelona on June 9, and an International Pavilion featuring two Italian exhibitions, ¨Grado Zero¨and ¨Ferro Taglienti¨, throughout the week.
