Alternative therapies in Barcelona: Ayurveda

Alternative therapies: Ayurveda
Written by Paula

Ayurveda is a natural form of therapy that is over four thousand years old. It’s origins lie in the Vedic culture of India. Ayurveda is one of the only systems of medicine developed in ancient times that is still widely used today.

The word Ayurveda is composed by two words: Ayur, which means life, and Veda, which means science or knowledge. Ayurveda can then be translated as “science of life”.

ayurveda barcelonaThough many people see it simply as an alternative, holistic form of medicine, Ayurveda actually aims to educate people about their bodies, helping them to stay vital while realizing their full human potential. It does so by providing guidelines on diet, routines and behavior. According to Ayurveda, health is the balanced and dynamic integration between one’s environment, spirit, mind and body.

Ayurveda treats people as a part of the whole universe, seeing life as an exchange of information and energy between the people and the environment. As a preventive form of therapy, Ayurveda helps patients to recognize if their environment is usually toxic or nourishing. A toxic environment will lead to patterns of illness, while nourishing environments will help the individual to thrive. Ayurveda teaches patients how  to eliminate the toxicity in their lives.

Ayurveda believes that the mind is the main influence in the body’s sickness or health, having seven principles for restoring and maintaining mind-body balance. Those principles are to sleep soundly every night, to eat a balanced diet full with colorful natural foods, to quiet the mind – in other words, meditate, to eliminate from your life what is not serving you, to exercise every day, and to do work you are passionate about.
