Music festivals and concerts
Barcelona hosts a series of musical events like Festival de Musica de Barcelona in the gardens of Pedralbes, a festival that has received iconic artists as Bob Dylan, The Pet Shop Boys and Tom Jones; Primavera Sound which takes place in the Forum, gathering some of the hippest names of contemporary music like Artic Monkeys, Alt J, Belle & Sebastian; or Sónar a music, creativity and technology festival, which each year presents shows by new and exciting names like FKA Twigs and established bands like The Chemical Brothers and Duran Duran.
Barcelona is a city that offers a lot in the field of sports. There are a number of major sporting events that take place each year, attracting athletes from all over the world. Some of the major events are the Barcelona Marathon, which takes place in March, F1 Gran Premio de España, which takes place in May, Cursa de la Mercè, during the Fiestas de la Mercè in September, CSIO, an international equestrian competition that also happens in September, and Barcelona World Race, which a yachting event that happens each December.
National holidays and major celebrations
Catalonia is a city where there is always something to celebrate.
Sant Jordi’s day is one of the most popular celebrations in Catalonia. On this day, men present women with flowers and women give them books in return. Sant Jordi’s day is celebrated on April 23rd.
The Feast of Sant Joan celebrates the start of Summer. It is celebrated from 23 to 24 of June, when the sky is lit up by fireworks and firecrackers pop all over the place. Great masses of people gather on the beach to watch the fireworks display, have a drink and dance together.

From August on, several neighborhoods in Barcelona celebrate their own Festa Major. During this week-long festival, the neighborhood’s streets are transformed, each one being decorated with a different colorful theme, competing for the prize of best decoration. The most popular of the fiestas is Festa Major de Gràcia.
Celebrated on the 24th of September, La Mercè is an annual festival with religious origins, celebrating Mare de Déu de la Mercé. There are parades that feature paper maché giants, the gegantets, correfocs, a parade that features a pyrotechnic display, the dance of the Sardana, concerts and the castellers, human towers.
