With over 400 million speakers, Spanish is one of the most spoken languages in the world and the official language of twenty-one different countries. It’s an extremely useful language to speak, and even though Catalan is the official language here in Catalonia, everyone also speaks Spanish.

If you’re interested in learning Spanish or just want to brush up and refine your Spanish skills a bit more, applications are a great way to learn without investing much time or money.

ShBarcelona has gathered a list of four of the best apps for learning Spanish to help you out in your language learning process.

Duolingo has been the top app for learning Spanish for a long time, with a top rating in the Apple Store and the Google Play Store. The app is made up of units with different vocabulary themes such as work, sports, hobbies, feelings, etc. and other units based on grammar.

Their latest feature enables you to have a conversation with a chatbot, so you can practice your sentence structure, conversation, and writing skills on your phone.

Another nice feature which will give you a bit of motivation is “Progress Sharing” where you can add friends and see who is learning the most Spanish every day.

Italki

Italki is an app and website which connects you with fellow language learners. You can fill in your details e.g: “I am a native English speaker with an intermediate level of Spanish.”

People who are looking to practice their English conversation and help others practice Spanish will be able to find your profile and connect with you and vice versa.

There is also the option to work with online tutors and read and write articles in your target language.

Memrise

Memrise is one of the best language learning apps out there, especially when it comes to learning (and remembering) vocabulary. Like other apps, there are different units like “Learning Spanish Vocab by Frequency” and “250 Most Commonly used Words.”

The main selling point for Memrise is the way it helps you remember words and phrases. They often give you English phrases with a Spanish word in them so you can make a connection with your own language i.e  for “los jovenes” meaning “the young” they might use a sentence like “Los jovenes are often jovial.”

FluentU

FluentU is an app and website that’s very different from traditional ways of language learning. They take real life videos, movie trailers, and speeches and put subtitles on them which you can interact with by clicking on the word in order to see the direct translation. It’s a great app for Spanish immersion, very easy to use, and you can dedicate as much time per lesson as you like.

There are so many apps to choose from when it comes to language learning, but these four are some of the best out there. When you don’t have time to take a formal class, they can be a great way to help you expand your Spanish vocabulary and practice your grammar a bit each day.

Have you tried one of these apps to learn or improve your Spanish? What did you think?
