Discover the marine life in buildings by Antoni Gaudi

From the exterior, the façade of Casa Batlló appears to have been constructed from the bones of giant sea creatures.

Marine life as an inspiration

Spanish architect, Antoni Gaudí infused this creation with iridescent colours and familiar shapes found most often beneath the sea. Marine life was the inspiration for this stunning work of architectural, which can be seen quite clearly in the colours that feature in the façade – colours very similar to those found in natural coral.

Gaudí designed this staggering building for a gentleman called Josep Batlló, a very wealthy aristocrat. Batlló and his family lived in the lower two floors of the building whilst the upper floors were rented out as apartments (pisos) to the general public.

Casa Batlló is a stunning piece of work – one of the most unique buildings in the world, and is an absolute must-see on your forthcoming visit to Barcelona.
