The Besós neighbourhood is one of the neighbourhoods that make up the large district of Sant Martí. It is a working-class neighbourhood with very affordable prices, close to the sea and well connected to the centre of Barcelona.
The neighbourhood of Besòs has many services and a large commercial network. It is ideal for single people or couples looking to live in Barcelona, who want to live near the sea at a cheaper price.
If you are thinking of renting an apartment in the district of Sant Martí, and if you are looking to live near the sea at a lower price, the neighbourhood of Besòs is a good option for you.
The neighbourhood of Besós owes its name to the river that carries the same name, that flows through this area of the Ciudad Condal. At first, the neighbourhood was built in order to accommodate the large number of people who came to Barcelona in search of a better future. The construction of the neighbourhood started with housing blocks and industrial estates, between the 60s and 70s of the twentieth century.
In the beginning the neighbourhood lacked municipal services, and it mainly became the neighbourhood that housed immigrants of all nationalities, who chose Barcelona as their new home. But residents began to complain about the lack of services, shops and means of transport, and little by little, thanks to the residents who spoke up, services were added to the neighbourhood.
Currently the area has colleges and institutes, a municipal market, civic centers and an efficient public transport network, that connects the neighbourhood with the centre of the Catalan capital.
The neighbourhood has undergone many changes recently, in general related to the Forum of Cultures which was held in the city of Barcelona in 2004. Since then, new buildings have been constructed, from luxury hotels to newly built apartments.
The apartments you will find here are of small dimensions, like studios or small apartments, although it is also possible to discover some larger apartments for families. Rental prices in this part of the city are more affordable, considering that it is still close to the sea, and it is ideal for those who seek to live near the beach, but like to pay a lower price for housing, compared to other more central areas near the coast.
You can visit the Parque del Forum de las Culturas in the neighbourhood of Besòs, an area next to the sea, that was created to facilitate one of the most important multicultural fairs that Barcelona has.
Currently this site is a designated location to host various music festivals and other cultural events. You can also have a look at the Museum of Natural Sciences of Barcelona in the Besòs neighbourhood, a space that has recently been inaugurated, more specifically in 2011, which exhibits exceptional collections of zoology that had previously been exhibited in the Castle of the Three Dragons, located in the Parque de la Ciutadella.
