For that reason, Abbot Oliva, a Benedictine monk considered the Catalan spiritual father, decided in accordance with the owners of all the nearby lands, to install a place of protection for the farmers.
The selected zone was 30 steps from the walls of each church in the area. The farmers could safely put the harvest of the parish priests and their own harvest there, and they would be protected from the aggression and mistreatment by the landlords.
These safe zones around churches were called sagrers, hence the name of the neighbourhood, La Sagrera. The neighbourhood has now become an area full of services and connections, with a good public transport network and plenty of shopping areas.
