The history of the neighbourhood of La Sagrera and the origin of its name are worthy of being told. It goes all the way back to the 11th century, when it was an agricultural and rural area, like most of the land bordering the centre of the Catalan capital.

Apparently, the poor farmers who, at that time, worked on their landowner’s land, lived in fear under the oppression of the aristocratic owners of the land. For that reason, Abbot Oliva, a Benedictine monk considered the Catalan spiritual father, decided in accordance with the owners of all the nearby lands, to install a place of protection for the farmers.

The selected zone was 30 steps from the walls of each church in the area. The farmers could safely put the harvest of the parish priests and their own harvest there, and they would be protected from the aggression and mistreatment by the landlords.

These safe zones around churches were called sagrers, hence the name of the neighbourhood, La Sagrera. The neighbourhood has now become an area full of services and connections, with a good public transport network and plenty of shopping areas.

On the subject of real estate, you can find a wide variety of properties here, from medium-sized apartments of between 60 and 90 square meters, to small studios that are ideal for single people and larger houses for large families.

Compared to other areas of Barcelona prices are not excessively high, making it an ideal neighbourhood for families who do not want to spend too much of their financial resources on their house.
