The neighbourhood of Barceloneta is one of the most sought after, by people who like to live near the beach and the sea. In the early days, it was a working class neighbourhood, basically inhabited by humble fishermen who worked at its surrounding coasts. Currently it is a cosmopolitan neighbourhood with village charm and great recreational and catering services. If you are looking for a lively, youthful district, close to the most popular beaches of the city, and full of typically seafood restaurants and exotic, fun entertainment venues, the Barceloneta neighbourhood is, without a doubt, an excellent option.
The neighbourhood of Barceloneta belongs to the popular district of Ciutat Vella, which is the most central district of Barcelona. It is a neighbourhood that feels like a village, characterized by narrow streets that lead to large promenades and very popular beaches, that have an energetic presence almost every month of the year. The well-known Mediterranean climate of Barcelona lets you enjoy its coasts and beaches practically all year round, and although only the brave dare to dive into the sea during the coldest months, it is possible to sunbathe and enjoy the sea breeze on sunny days. The apartments that are for rent here, are usually of smaller dimensions. Sometimes you can come across small houses with one or two floors, which are former homes of fishermen, which have now been renovated with remarkable taste. The prices are not excessive, compared to other neighbourhoods of Ciutat Vella, except for those with sea views, which tend to have a higher price for exactly that reason. In recent years Barceloneta has suffered certain tensions related to gentrification and mass tourism in Barcelona. The result is that prices have risen above average, since the neighbourhood is very close to the center and beaches.
The neighbourhood of Barceloneta has undergone a profound transformation due to the Olympics of 1992. Up until then, Barcelona had turned its back to the marvelous sea. The promenades that were built for this event turned a popular neighbourhood with a certain ghetto feel, into a cosmopolitan area with a new focus on tourism and services. Besides having a beach that bears the same name, Barceloneta is one of the most popular places for sunbathing among the inhabitants of the city. A must-see is the Church of Sant Miquel del Port, located at the Plaza de la Barceloneta. It is in Baroque style and considered an official ‘Local Good of Interest’. In 1996 Barceloneta Park was inaugurated. It sits on the former land of the Catalan Gas factory. Surrounded by pine trees, tamarind trees and palm trees, the park preserves certain constructions related to the old factory. You can also visit the spectacular building of the headquarters of Gas Natural Fenosa, now Naturgy. It is considered a unique building for its one-of-a-kind architecture.
